Tests carried out post mortem or on live horses have shown that around 80% of all horses suffer from stomach ulcers. The main course is stress. There are different types of stress, performance induced stress, mental stress and nutritionally induced stress. Each of these can be viewed as a possible course of illness.
A combination of these is seriously damaging to the horse. Many products on offer are to one dimensional to offer long term and effective assistance. Some agents like sodium bicarbonate only buffer the stomach acid and others are only working as a pain reliever.

Firstly a horse produces stomach acid continuously, not just at feeding time as he is a permanent eater. Permanent eating means permanent saliva production.
Horses eating permanently produce up to 50 litres of saliva a day and with it they dilute the acid concentration in the stomach.
A horse takes four or five times longer to eat one kg of hay than he would of concentrates. So in the case of concentrates, the concentration of stomach acids increases by some 400 % because the horse does not produce enough saliva when eating concentrates.
